The Five Points Brewing Company is an independent brewery based in Hackney, East London.
We brew beer that is unfiltered, unpasteurized and full of flavour – the sort of beer we enjoy drinking and we hope you enjoy drinking, too.
We brew beer on site within a Victorian railway arch underneath Hackney Downs Station, or with our partners at a family brewery in Belgium. After many months of recipe development and trial brewing, we brewed our first batch of Five Points Pale on our full commercial brewhouse on the 9th of March 2013. Our flagship Five Points Pale is one of our core range of now eight beers: Five Points Pale, Hook Island Red, Railway Porter, Five Points IPA, Brick Field Brown, Five Points XPA, Five Points Pils and London Smoke. We produce beers across a multiple range of formats, including keg, cask, can and bottle, which are distributed from our Warehouse space on Mare Street.
We are based in Hackney because the owners and founders live in Hackney, and it was important for us to be part of our local community. We strive to be a socially responsible business and employer, contributing to the community around us. We are a Living Wage employer, we run an apprenticeship scheme for 18-24 year olds in Hackney, we source the electricity for our brewhouse from 100% renewable sources, and we are committed to assisting local charities and community projects.
We are of course as committed to the integrity of our brewing as we are to our social and business responsibilities. It is really important to us that our beers are brewed to the highest possible standards of quality, consistency and flavour. We are passionate about our beer and want you to be too. Edward Mason is the brewery’s Owner and Director, overseeing the operations, running and expansion of the The Five Points. Ed is also the proprietor of Whitelock’s Ale House (Leeds’ oldest pub) and The Turk’s Head in Leeds, The Deramore Arms in York, and the new Mason & Company in Hackney Wick. He formerly ran The Duke of Wellington pub in Dalston, as well as the much-beloved Mason & Taylor in Bethnal Green.
Greg Hobbs is the Head Brewer and co-founder of the The Five Points. Greg launched his career in brewing as Assistant Brewer at East London Brewing Company, joining Ed to launch The Five Points in early 2013. Greg is responsible for recipe development, the day to day operations within the brewery and for maintaining our high brewing standards!
Doreen Joy Barber is our Community & Marketing Manager, having worked previously in content management and public relations roles with Slow Food UK and Great British Chefs. In addition to looking after our social media and online presence and often representing the brewery at events, Doreen also manages London Brewers’ Market with Ed.
Thom Hill is our Sales & Account Manager, who has been with us since January 2015. Thom has a solid background in the drinks retail and wholesale, having previously worked for Oddbins and Borough Wines. Thom looks after our customers and potential customers, works with our wholesale distributors and manages the demand for our beer.
Fergus Gallagher is an Assistant Head Brewer and was our first Brewers’ Apprentice through the apprenticeship scheme we started with Hackney Community College. As part of his training, Fergus has a Diploma in Brewing with The Institute of Brewing & Distilling. Additionally, Fergus is a certified first level Cicerone, and has been a welcome part of The Five Points since July 2014.
Klára Nagy is our Logistics & Distribution Manager, and has been an integral part of The Five Points since October 2013. Klára is incredibly adept at managing the logistics of orders and deliveries for our customers as close as Hackney and as far away as Rome, as well as preparing the orders for our EeBria customers.
Tom Hampton is our Warehouse Manager, overseeing the deliveries of stock ordered directly from The Five Points to our trade customers. He keeps our space organised and shuttles stock from the brewery to our Mare Street warehouse. Tom has been a part of the brewery since the beginning, originally assisting Greg with packaging and brews.
James Allen is our Production & Packaging Manager who uses his talents to organise the racking and packaging of our beer. He was made a full-time employee of The Five Points as of February 2015, previously working part-time as a Brewhand while working as the assistant manager of The Jolly Butchers. James is an avid and talented homebrewer.
Sam Lonsdale is our Brewery Assistant and is currently studying for the General Certificate in Brewing with The Institute of Brewing & Distilling. He’s worked with us since November 2014 and has been a wonderful representative of The Five Points at events, including our appearance at the Houses of Parliament as part of the Living Wage Marketplace in 2015.
Francesca Slattery is our Sales Representative who completely switched careers to join us full-time at the start of 2016, after ten years of working in higher education. Francesca has been a thorough asset to our sales force by looking after our customers, organising our orders, and brilliantly representing us at events.
Ben Winders is our Events Organiser who joined the team in March of 2016, and has been a champion of our Warehouse Yard Parties as well as our stands at beer festivals up and down the land! Ben has gone through not knowing how to pour a pint to now being able to build a full event bar with us, and we’re putting his experience at the 2012 London Olympics to good use.
Alix Shaw is our Lead Packaging Operative, having previously assisted in London Brewers’ Market organisation. Alix is fantastic at putting beer in things, and is a star fixture of our monthly Five Points brewery tours. She is also one of the co-organisers of Crafty Beer Girls, a local London social group for women working in and who enjoy a good beer.
