Nana Greg, Old Greg and a Christmas pudding recipe to remember!
Nov 02, 2026
This time of year is the perfect time to start prepping for Christmas (yes, its closer than you think!) 🎄
And before the work xmas parties, the stocking fillers and carolling in the cold start, we'd like to draw your attention to the first thing we prep for: pudding.
For our Brewery Facilities Manager, Ian, this tradition goes beyond Five Points. Here we have a copy of his grandmother's original Christmas pudding recipe, in her handwriting!Â

Ian's great-grandmother was his "Nana Greg"; an abbreviation of her last name, Gregory. Coincidentally, Five Points' barley wine is named after our Director of Beer, Greg Hobbs.Â

The original copy of her recipe
"My dear old great Nana Greg, used to make Christmas pudding at this time of year and it has barley wine in it."
Christmas Pudding
Grated rind and juice of 1 lemon
6oz finely chopped suet (or shredded)
6oz sultanas
6oz rasins
6oz currants
1 1/2oz whole almonds (I use ground almonds)
3oz plain flour
1/2 level tsp ground nutmeg
3oz breadcrumbs
6oz moist brown sugar
3oz peel, chopped
2 eggs beaten
1 small wine glass brandy sherry or fruit juice
I use barley wine (you can use stout)
I usually add small glass brandy
8 hours steaming 1st day
2 hours steaming on Christmas day
"Put all dry ingredients in a bowl, mix together then add lemon juice, peel, eggs, brandy, beer, mix together well with your hands. Barley wine is the beer I use."
