Battle of the Brewers Red Lager: Your New Autumn Favourite
Oct 02, 2023
Earlier this year, we put our brewery team to the test to see who could create the best beer. We brewed four different beers on our pilot kit, and launched all four side-by-side on an April weekend.
The voting was tense across the weekend at the Five Points Taproom, as the community put in their votes. Would the Grapefruit Bradler, a lager-based radler with lashings of grapefruit, come out on top? Or would the West Coast-inspired IPA dubbed Drop It Like It’s Hopped win the tastebuds of the masses? Maybe the Biscoff bitter, Bit-o-Biscoff, would beguile the audience with its sweet ways?
Although all of these beers tasted delicious, the one that came out on top was Red Lager–a beer taking notes from American Red Ales and Amber Lagers, brewed with UK-grown hops. The combination of a lightly toasted and spicy malt base with a crisp, clean body and finish was a winning one, and so, in September, we brewed a full batch of the beer on our big kit.
It’s a great time of year to be introducing this beer to trade. The dark red colouring of the Red Lager aptly matches some of the leaves that will inevitably fall to the ground as we prepare to grab an extra layer or two before a walk to the pub. It’s an ideal beer to pair with some of the richer meals that tend to be on menus in the autumn–think roast beef, duck, and venison, along with squash wellingtons, black bean burgers, and charred beetroot.
Now available for our trade customers this week, look out for our Red Lager on the taps of a pub near you soon. You will definitely find it on the bar at our Five Points Taproom & Courtyard throughout October, and you’ll likely see it at The Pembury Tavern during our joint celebration of Five Years With Five Points, our anniversary with The Pembury.
