Turning Point Brew Co and Five Points Brewing Company are reviving heritage beer with modern flair
In May 2025, Turning Point Brew Co, from Knaresborough, teamed up with The Five Points Brewing Company tohonour the legacy of traditional beer recipes. While the beer industry is booming with an unprecedented variety of beer styles, there's a renewed appreciation for classic brews alongside their contemporary counterparts.
Cask beer is experiencing a renaissance within pubs, as consumers gravitate towards sessionable ABVs and quintessential British styles. According to the 2024 SIBA Independent Beer Report, cask production from small brewers has surged by 10% annually since 2020. Many craft brewers, previously focused on keg offerings, have embraced cask beer over the past two years.
Aron McMahon, Co-founder of Turning Point, discovered an 1895 Rose’s recipe from the archives of a now defunct Malton brewery while working there. Recognising the challenge of bringing back such a recipe, he reached out to the team at Five Points.
“We were thrilled to brew these two distinct examples of the same style,” says Greg Hobbs, Co-founder and Director of Brewing at Five Points. “Brewing historical beers with modern ingredients is a fantastic way to keep our brewing heritage alive. These two Milds, inspired by recipes a century apart, celebrate the tradition of British brewing and the change in beer drinkers’ tastes over the years.”
In this collaborative effort, Turning Point has brought the Rose’s recipe to life, while Five Points crafted a Mild inspired by recipes from 1995. Although each beer can be enjoyed independently, the concept encourages drinkers to compare, contrast, or simply enjoy them together.
The goal is to celebrate not just the historical significance of beer heritage but also its dynamic and evolving nature. These brews pay tribute to both the old and the new, honouring the roots of British brewing while embracing its future.
Both beers will debut at Five Points and Turning Point venues on 24th April, coinciding with CAMRA’s "Mild In May" initiative. Following the launch, they will be available in pubs and festivals nationwide, as well as through each brewery's online shop.
